UK MoD orders Giraffe 1X radars

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has ordered an undisclosed number of Giraffe 1X radar systems from Saab UK valued at nearly GBP24 million (USD31.84 million), according to a 1 April Saab press release.
The order was made with funding from the NATO Security Assistance and Training Ukraine (NSATU) Trust Fund, as per the release.
NSATU prioritises the use of the trust fund for the improvement of Ukraine's operational effectiveness. It also works “in close coordination” with the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) to decide where the fund can be best used, according to the NSATU website. The radars are being produced at Saab UK's Centre of Radar Excellence in Fareham, Hampshire.
The Giraffe 1X is a small, lightweight X-band 3D active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar that can be installed on most mobile vehicles, fixed structures, or command-and-control (C2) systems. Its role includes force protection, target location and tracking, ground-based air defence, detection of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and sea surface surveillance, according to Saab.
