The US government has approved the sale of Lockheed Martin HH-60W Jolly Green II combat search-and-rescue (CSAR) helicopters to Norway for an estimated USD2.6 billion.

Announced by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) on 11 July, the US Department of State approval covers up to nine of the Black Hawk-derivative helicopters, related equipment, training, and support.

“The proposed sale will improve Norway's capability to meet current and future threats by increasing its airborne combat and special operations capabilities,” the DSCA said.

Currently operated only by the United States, the HH-60W replaced the Sikorsky HH-60G Pave Hawk in US Air Force (USAF) service in 2020. The new helicopter improved on its predecessor in that it hosted a new fuel system that nearly doubled the capacity of the internal tank, could carry more weapons, had more capable defensive systems, greater hover performance, more electrical and cooling capacity, improved avionics, and also featured enhanced cyber-security, environmental, and net-centric capabilities.
