UK DIP 2026: GCAP security and other wins for UK combat aviation offset by some delays and early retirements

The UK Defence Investment Plan (DIP) 2026 provided a mix of positives and negatives for the country's future aviation capabilities, with wins for some key projects being offset by losses for others as priorities have shifted in the more than 12 months since the release of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR) 2025 that underpinned it.

Published on 30 June 2026, the DIP set out the means by which the SDR 2025 published on 2 June 2025 will be delivered over the next four years to 2030. Speaking to Janes and others ahead of the release of the DIP 2026, senior government and MoD officials who requested not to be identified spelled out the report's key takeaways.

Key positives for the Air domain included the safeguarding of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) with funding for the full design and development phase, a commitment to the Long-Term Evolution (LTE) of the Eurofighter Typhoon, and a ramp-up in the production of some air-launched weapons. These, however, were set against a delay to the Ministry of Defence's (MoD's) helicopter modernisation plans as priorities have shifted more towards unmanned aircraft systems (UAVs), while older manned intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft types are to be retired early in favour of unmanned solutions.
