Uganda opens helicopter MRO facility

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni opened what was described as Sub-Saharan Africa's only helicopter maintenance, repair, and overall (MRO) facility at Nakasongola Air Base on 22 January.
The president commended the Ministry of Defence for the initiative and tweeted that the facility “will help Uganda save about USD3.5 million that could have been spent on transportation and overhauling one helicopter outside Uganda”.
He also released photographs of an old Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) Mi-24 attack helicopter undergoing work in a hangar.
In a statement, the MoD identified the facility as the Pro Heli International Services helicopter MRO plant in Nakasongola Military Cantonment.
Pro Heli International Services describes itself as a joint venture with the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), which is the Ugandan MoD's commercial arm and is fully certified to overhaul Mi-17 and Mi-24 helicopters.
