Covid-19: Spain’s military lab to manufacture drugs to counter pandemic

The Spanish government is reported to have ordered a Ministry of Defence (MoD) laboratory to start producing drugs for civilian use during the Covid-19 crisis.

Paracetamol, antiviral drugs for injections, and disinfectants are on the list to “guarantee the supply of essential products”, ABC newspaper reported on 24 March. It said production has already started at the Centro Militar de Farmacia de la Defensa laboratory, located at the Spanish Army’s San Pedro logistics base, 30 km north of Madrid.

The manufacture of other drugs, including Ribavirina, which is a more complex antiviral used against hepatitis C but also belived to help against Covid-19, is due to start this week.
