The professional medical teams needed aboard US Navy (USN) hospital ships USNS Comfort (T-AH-20) and USNS Mercy (T-AH-19) assembled on 19 March to help prepare the vessels for missions meant to help civilian hospitals on the US East Coast and the West Coast cope with the Covid-19 crisis, Rear Admiral Bruce Gillingham, USN surgeon general, said.

“The core of the staff are reporting today as we speak to ready the ship for the missions,” Rear Adm Gillingham said on 19 March during a media briefing at the Pentagon.

The ships are still being refurbished following previous operations and exactly when to deploy is still uncertain.
