Covid-19: Aircraft carrier Ford reaches milestone with anchor ops

18 March 2020

Aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) completed a significant milestone on 15 March, despite US Navy (USN) compliance with the restrictions of Covid-19 guidance.

Ford conducted an inaugural anchoring evolution during its independent steaming event, the USN confirmed on 18 March, marking the first time Ford had conducted the evolution using its portside anchor.

The successful port anchoring will allow greater flexibility for Ford in future sea and anchor evolutions, accommodating various sea conditions with additional manoeuvrability, USN officials said.

What makes the Ford anchor evolutions even more important for the ship's development is that, like other major ship systems, CVN-78's anchor design is different from what it is on Nimitz-class ships.
