Malawi’s military commander is sacked

The appointment of a new commander of the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) was announced on 17 March, ending the short tenure of General Vincent Nundwe.

The office of president Peter Mutharika announced that Major General Peter Andrew Lapken Namathanga has been appointed as the new MDF commander and promoted to full general.

The statement said Gen Nundwe and his deputy had been assigned to other duties, using the 'rtd' abbreviation after their ranks to indicate they had been retired.

Malawi's The Nation newspaper quoted Nundwe as saying, "My conscience is clear that I performed according to the requirement of the office.
