Commercial satellite imagery captured on 12 March reveals that a fifth HQ-9B strategic surface-to-air missile (SAM) battery is operational with China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).
The site, identified by Jane’s during a review of Chinese air-defence installations, is located north of Beijing near Yaoshang in the Huairou District. The installation, which is home to the PLAAF’s 50th Battalion of the 22nd SAM Brigade, had previously operated the HQ-2 air-defence system, and was refurbished to house the HQ-9B battery.
