Rheinmetall, NIOA to start work on new munitions facility

11 March 2020

A joint venture (JV) between Rheinmetall Defence Australia (RDA) and Australian weapon systems specialist NIOA has announced the start of a project to construct a munitions forging facility in Queensland, Australia.

NIOA said on 11 March that the new facility will be positioned to produce munitions for the Australian Defence Force (AFD) and to meet Rheinmetall's international supply-chain requirements. The facility is scheduled to be fully operational by 2022.

NIOA said investment in the new facility is worth about AUD60 million (USD39 million), including pledged investment from the Australian federal government worth AUD28.5 million. This funding is sourced from the government's Regional Growth Fund, an investment project to support regional economic expansion and job creation.
