The US Army and the United States Marine Corps (USMC) both announced in their Financial Year (FY) 2021 budget estimates their intentions to procure the Barret Multi-Role Adaptive Design (MRAD) as their newest sniper rifle.
The army intends to initially procure 536 rifles at a cost of USD10.14 million and 250 rifles for USD4 million for the USMC. This follows the US Special Operations Command's decision in March 2019 to procure the MRAD.
The MRAD is a bolt-action precision sniper rifle (PSR) designed by Barrett so that its calibre can be switched with relative speed and ease. Both the US Army and USMC are looking to procure the rifle with the available calibres of 7.62×51 mm NATO, .300 Norma Magnum, and .338 Norma Magnum.
