The Russian Navy will make its first-ever deployment of a submarine to the Philippines as part of an international fleet review event in May 2020.
In comments carried by the official Philippine News Agency (PNA) on 25 February, the Russian ambassador to Manila, Igor Khovaev, confirmed that the submarine will be part of a detachment of Russian Navy vessels that will also participate in the fleet review.
Manila will hold the fleet review as part of the Western Pacific Naval Symposium (WPNS), which is being hosted in the Philippines for the first time. The fleet review will be held in Manila Bay and it is expected to see the participation of at least 24 navies.
