Switzerland's Federal Council submitted its Armeebotschaft (Armed Forces Message) 2020 budget to parliament with a ceiling of CHF21.1 billion (USD21.6 billion) for 2021-24, the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection, and Sports (VBS) announced on its website on 19 February. It also requested CHF2.7 billion for armaments and equipment procurement and building programmes.
The VBS said that investments totalling CHF15 million would be necessary in the next decade: CHF8 billion to protect Swiss airspace and CHF7 billion for other parts of the armed forces. Parliament approved a ceiling for the four years from 2017 through 2020 of CHF20 billion, including CHF3 billion a year for operating costs.
