The US Navy (USN) will conduct a critical engineering validation test on its Self Defense Test Ship (SDTS) next month which, if successful, will pave the way for the resumption of live fire testing in support of the DDG 1000 Zumwalt-class destroyer programme.
This follows investigations determining that the Zumwalt Combat System (ZCS) was not the cause of earlier testing issues affecting testing on the SDTS.
Problems affecting the DDG 1000 test programme came to light in the Director, Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E) 2019 annual report released earlier this year. While the exact nature of the problems was not identified, the DOT&E claimed the poor results forced the navy to suspend the test programme while the root cause of the problems was identified.
