Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), expects to expand its work force to handle its booming backlog, but the headcount growth will not be as dramatic as one might think, according to company officials.
Recent productivity increases driven by technology and other factors mean Newport News can now complete tasks with fewer people than has historically been the case, the officials said on 18 February at an HII investor day. The Virginia-based division currently has more than 25,000 employees.
