The US Army’s fiscal year 2021 (FY 2021) budget request outlines USD11.9 million in funding for the Next Generation Squad Weapon’s (NGSW’s) new 6.8 mm ammunition.
The budget request, released on 10 February, asks Congress to fund this new start programme to provide for 3.6 million cartridges. The total funding envisaged through FY 2025 is about USD470.9 million.
The NGSW-R and the NGSW-AR chambered for the intermediate 6.8 mm cartridge are being evaluated by the US Army. The prototypes downselected are from GD-OTS, Sig Sauer, and Textron. GD-OTS offers the True Velocity Composite-Cased Ammunition (TVCM), while Textron Systems proposed a polymer case telescoped (CT) solution.
