Pentagon budget 2021: Army preparing for PrSM buy

12 February 2020

The US Army is flight testing and analysing data for two Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) prototypes but it is also preparing to spend USD1 billion to buy the new weapon over the next five years.

When the Trump Administration delivered its fiscal year 2021 (FY 2021) budget request to Congress on 10 February it included a request for USD50 million next year to buy 30 PrSMs as part of an ‘urgent material release’, while it also provided tentative spending plans to help the service reach its acquisition objective for 2,422 missiles.

To get to that figure, in addition to next year’s request, the army said it wants to spend USD168 million in FY 2022 for 110 PrSMs, USD210 million in FY 2023 for 178, USD335 million in FY 2024 for 350, and in FY 2025 an additional USD310 million for another 350 missiles.
