The Pentagon is reinforcing its efforts to develop advanced capabilities in the fields of artificial intelligence, machine learning and 5G networking, setting aside billions in research and development funds in its fiscal year 2021 (FY 2021) budget proposal for those critical initiatives.
Department of Defense officials earmarked a total of USD2.3 billion in funding within its FY 2021 budget blueprint to fund ongoing work in all three technology areas. Pentagon officials requested USD1.5 billion for R&D work in its microelectronics sector, which "funds Artificial Intelligence-pacing technology; continues addressing trusted and assured supply of microelectronics [and] hastens adoption of "ubiquitous connectivity" - a burgeoning capability designed to push more data through bandwidth channels expanded by 5G technologies, the department's FY 2021 budget documents released on 10 February stated.
