The proposed fiscal year (FY) 2021 budget request for the US Navy (USN) underscores the USN’s desire to develop more capable strike capability, according to USN budget documents released on 10 February.
The USN is looking to accelerate the development of long-range hypersonic strike – the service is taking the Pentagon lead for the effort – and its conventional prompt strike (CPS) capability.
The USN’s FY 2021 budget request includes about USD1 billion research for CPS for “precise and timely strike capability in contested environments across surface and sub-surface platforms”.
In FY 2020 the USN requested about USD512 million for the programme.
