The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has accused the Israeli Air Force (IAF) of using a civilian airliner as cover during an airstrike early on 6 February.

MoD spokesperson Major General Igor Konashenkov told Russian news agencies that four IAF F-16 multirole fighters launched eight missiles against targets on the outskirts of Damascus from outside Syrian airspace.

The state-controlled Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) earlier reported the Israeli airstrikes, saying most of the missiles were intercepted by its air defences before they reached their targets.

Maj Gen Konashenkov said the exchange of fire endangered an Airbus A320 that was flying into Damascus International Airport from Tehran with 172 people on board, prompting Syrian air traffic controllers to divert it to the Russian airbase at Humaymim for its safety.
