Japanese MoD increasingly concerned about North Korea’s growing military capabilities

31 January 2020

Japan Ministry of Defense (MoD) officials have expressed their growing concerns about North Korea’s increasing military capabilities, especially regarding the communist country’s development of weapons of mass destruction, reiterating their assessment that Pyongyang has already successfully miniaturised a nuclear warhead for fitment onto a ballistic missile.

Speaking to Jane’s in Tokyo on 26 January the officials said that, given the time since North Korea’s first nuclear test in October 2006, it would be prudent to assume that the Northeast Asian country has already developed such a miniaturisation capability, adding that Pyongyang claimed to have tested a nuclear “warhead” during its fifth nuclear weapon test, which was carried out in September 2016.
