EU and national officials say there must be no ‘wild west’ militarisation of space, even as Europe’s national armies prepare to defend their space assets from the ground and space if necessary.
“Space is essential for the efficacy of modern armies, while its strategic aspect is undeniable,” Belgian foreign and defence minister Philippe Goffin told the European Space Conference in Brussels on 21 January. “But we remain opposed to the militarisation of space.”
