Spain's Expal Systems has been awarded two separate contracts to supply the Philippine Navy (PN) with naval gun ammunition and mortars.
Under a USD1.2 million contract Expal is set to deliver 720 training and 748 high-explosive, point-detonating 76 mm rounds for the service's two José Rizal-class multirole frigates. The first of these vessels is expected to be handed over to the PN between April and May, while the second is set to be delivered between September and October.
Each of these frigates, which have been built by Hyundai Heavy Industries, is armed with a Leonardo 76 mm Super Rapid naval gun in the primary position and a 30 mm 'SMASH' remote-controlled stabilised gun system from Turkey's Aselsan in the aft section.
