US President Donald Trump said the United States will impose additional sanctions on Iran instead of retaliatory military strikes, at least for now, after Tehran launched short-range ballistic missiles at two Iraqi bases housing US and coalition forces.
A day after Iran struck the bases, which was retaliation for a US strike that killed Major General Qasem Soleimani, the head of Iran's Quds Force, Trump in a rare formal address said the Iranian airstrike did not kill any Iraqi or US troops.
"No American or Iraqi lives were lost because of the precautions taken, the dispersal of forces, and an early warning system that worked very well," he said om 8 January, noting the bases only incurred "minimal damage".
