Iran launches short-range ballistic missiles at US bases in Iraq

08 January 2020

Iran retaliated for the assassination of a top general by launching more than a dozen short-range ballistic missiles at two Iraqi bases housing US and coalition forces, the Pentagon announced on 7 January.

"It is clear that these missiles were launched from Iran and targeted at least two Iraqi military bases hosting US military and coalition personnel at Al-Assad and Irbil," the department wrote in a brief statement.

"As we evaluate the situation and our response, we will take all necessary measures to protect and defend US personnel, partners, and allies in the region," the statement added. A Department of Defense official confirmed to Jane's that Tehran launched short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) during the strike, but referred additional questions to US Central Command.
