The Turkish parliament approved the deployment of troops to Libya in an emergency session on 2 January.

The parliamentary motion allows the deployment of non-combatant troops to act as advisers and trainers to support the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA), which is under attack from the powerful Libyan National Army (LNA) faction that is backed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt, and Russia.

Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar declined to comment on the timing and make-up of the expected deployment to Libya.

The Sozcu newspaper reported that Turkey will initially send Hisar and Korkut air defence systems as well as military personnel to train forces loyal to the GNA.
