Trump orders airstrike killing top Iranian general

03 January 2020

The United States escalated its conflict with Iran on 3 January when President Donald Trump ordered a military airstrike at Baghdad's international airport in Iraq to kill General Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite Quds Force.

"At the direction of the president, the US military has taken decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad by killing Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force, a US-designated Foreign Terrorist Organization," the Department of Defense (DoD) wrote in a statement.

The Pentagon and US Central Command did not immediately respond to Jane's questions about the weapons used in the strike or if Congress or the Iraqi government had been notified in advance of the attack.
