The US Army is set to begin 'shakedown' testing for its Extended Range Cannon Artillery Increment 1 (ERCA Inc 1) prototype but is also plotting the course to receive ERCA Inc 2 prototypes in 2022, and these may not be an upgrade to the Paladin M109A7 self-propelled howitzer.
Under the ERCA Inc 2 effort, the service plans to host an industry day during the third week of January 2020 to update potential vendors about the programme, acquisition strategy, and the envisioned capabilities for the weapon. The army then anticipates releasing a request for prototype proposal around April 2020 before four prototypes are delivered to the service in the fourth quarter for fiscal year 2022 (FY 2022).
