North Korea announced on 8 December that it has conducted a “very important test” at the Sohae Satellite Launch Station, which serves both as the country’s main satellite launch facility, as well as a missile engine test site.
In a short statement carried by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Pyongyang did not specify what type of test was conducted, saying only that the country’s Academy of the National Defence Science “made a report on the results of the successful test of great significance to the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea”.
The KCNA added that the results of “the recent important test”, which was reportedly carried out in the afternoon of 7 December, will have “an important effect on changing the strategic position of the DPRK [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] once again in the near future”.
