US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad began on 3 December a trip to Afghanistan and Qatar to meet with Afghan leaders and government representatives and rejoin talks with the Taliban about the steps that could lead to intra-Afghan negotiations and a peaceful settlement of the 18-year-old conflict.
Khalilzad arrived in Kabul less than a week after US President Donald Trump indicated during a 28 November visit to US troops at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan that he would be willing to restart peace negotiations with the militant group.
"The Taliban want to make a deal. We'll see if they want to make a deal.
