US President Donald Trump tweeted on 24 November that he plans to nominate US Ambassador to Norway Kenneth Braithwaite to be US Navy secretary, replacing Richard V Spencer, who was ousted earlier in the day over a personnel dispute.
Braithwaite, whose nomination must be confirmed by the US Senate, has been the 31st US ambassador to Norway since February 2018. A former naval aviator, Braithwaite retired from the navy as a rear admiral.
Trump called Braithwaite "a man of great achievement and success" who "will do an outstanding job".
Coincidentally, Spencer's ouster came less than two weeks after he visited Norway, where he met with that country's prime minister and defence minister, among other high-ranking government officials.
