A German C-160 transport aircraft has inaugurated a new runway in Niamey by carrying out a test landing and take-off in the capital of Niger, the Bundeswehr announced on 26 November.
The existing runway at Niamey’s international airport is also used by the Nigerien Air Force and several Western militaries, all of which have bases to the north.
The Bundeswehr described the new runway as a backup that will ensure military aircraft can land and take-off even when the main runway is being repaired. It said that various ground operations would not be feasible without it due to the absence of an around-the-clock medical evacuation capability.
