OCEAN2020, the flagship project funded by the EU’s pilot defence research programme, has demonstrated real-time sharing of maritime situational awareness videos across multiple navies from heterogenous air, sea and satellite reconnaissance platforms for the first time, according to EU and project officials.
The 21 November demonstration was based on live vignettes in the Mediterranean near Taranto, Italy involving the navies of France, Greece, Italy and Spain, plus diverse unmanned air, surface and underwater platforms, five surveillance and communications satellites, and four national maritime operations centres (MOCs). Videos of the scenario’s ship-interdiction and counter-mine manoeuvres were beamed into a prototype EU MOC set up within the European Defence Agency for the purposes of demonstrating the technology.
