The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has contracted Babcock for the design and build of the Royal Navy’s (RN’s) new Type 31 general-purpose frigate.
Signed on 15 November, the award covers the delivery of five ships at an average production cost of GBP250 million (USD320 million) each.
The Babcock-led Team 31 – also including Thales, OMT, and BMT – was in September this year confirmed as preferred supplier for the Type 31 programme. The team had proposed the Arrowhead 140 design, which is based on the Iver Huitfeldt-class platform already in service with the Royal Danish Navy.
In an unusual move, the Type 31 contract has been concluded despite the UK being in a pre-election period.
