UK Royal Navy begins mini-UAV training

08 November 2019

UK Royal Navy (RN) personnel have begun flying mini-unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from an airfield in Cornwall as part of the service's experimentation drive.

The AeroVironment RQ-20 Puma and Wasp III UAV systems were purchased off the shelf earlier this year for use by the RN's UAV experimental unit, 700X Naval Air Squadron (NAS).

Jane's understand the UAVs are being used as an assessment of their suitability and applicability for use at sea and ashore by the RN and Royal Marines (RM). This effort will continue over the next year and will involve a variety of different environments and situations.
