Thailand has outlined a commitment to ensure that technology transfers are secured in all major defence procurement programmes. The policy is intended to support the development of local industry in defence and commercial sectors.
Lt Gen Kongcheep Tantravanich, spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence (MoD), confirmed in a briefing with reporters in late October that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has prioritised the technology-transfer strategy to ensure that defence equipment is produced locally.
He said Prayut wants all foreign procurement programmes to be accompanied by technology-transfer packages to facilitate localised production or further research and development (R&D) projects. R&D and defence manufacturing should also be supported through collaborative programmes featuring the MoD's Defence Technology Institute (DTI), he said.
