The Argentine Economy Ministry authorised USD195 million in a three-year funding plan to build a polar ship for the navy.
After analysing offers from China, South Africa, and Ukraine, a letter of intention was signed with the Chinese government. The ship is based on Argentina National Technological University modifications to an initial Chinese design.
The Chinese will initially finance the construction, with a credit to be paid by Argentina within three years.
Initially, the ship was to be built in China, but the vessel may be built in Argentina at Río Santiago shipyard under Chinese supervision.
