Boeing CEO Muilenberg loses chairman’s role

13 October 2019

Boeing’s board of directors is scaling back the duties of its top executive to allow him to focus on fixing the company’s troubled new 737 MAX commercial airliner.

Dennis Muilenberg will continue as chief executive officer but will hand over his chairman’s hat to David L. Calhoun, who has been the board’s independent lead director, Boeing announced late on 11 October. Calhoun is a senior managing director at the Blackstone Group, a New York City-based private equity firm.

Calhoun said the board has “full confidence” in Muilenberg as CEO and believes that “this division of labour will enable maximum focus on running the business with the board playing an active oversight role”.
