The Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) has disclosed that German export approvals of defence and security equipment increased by 75% year on year in the first nine months of 2019.
The growth occurred despite the decision by Germany on 18 September to extend its ban on the transfer of defence equipment to Saudi Arabia over its participation in the civil war in Yemen and the murder of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
Responding to a question in the Bundestag from Omid Nouripour, a member of the Bundestag representing the Green Party, the BMWi disclosed that EUR6.35 billion (USD6.96 billion) of defence equipment exports were approved from January to September.
