Indigenous military programmes should play a crucial role in Taiwanese national security doctrine, according to a researcher at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research (INDSR), a Taipei-based think tank.
Speaking on 4 October during the annual Taipei Defense and Security Forum, INDSR research fellow Dr Hung Jui-min said that greater industrial self-sufficiency is an essential component of a "comprehensive military strategy" that combines "defence needs and industry development". Hung argued that this approach would deliver greater strategic autonomy and economic benefits for Taiwan.
In June Taiwan's government approved legislation to support the development of its domestic defence industrial base.
