01 October 2019

Japan and the Philippines held their inaugural defence industry forum on 1 October to explore areas of potential collaboration in research, development, and production.

The Japan Ministry of Defense's Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) said the forum - held in Manila - is aimed at "promoting defence equipment and technology co-operation" between the two countries.

Jane's understands that a specific area of focus is maritime security. Technologies and platforms regarded as potential areas for collaboration include unmanned and robotic systems; communications, command-and-control systems; and radar and surveillance equipment.

Potential industrial collaboration is framed around a Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology agreement signed by the two countries in 2016.
