China showcases JL-2 submarine-launched ballistic missile at 70th anniversary parade

30 September 2019

The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has given the JL-2 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) its first official appearance.

The weapon was one of several missile types that made their debut on 1 October at the 70th National Day celebrations in Beijing, which commemorates the country's founding in 1949.

The PLAN is believed to have been conducting tests of the JL-2 from trial submarines as early as 2002, and the weapon is understood to have become operational in 2014.

However, the PLA has never acknowledged the existence of this weapon, nor displayed it at official events.

The JL-2 is the primary weapon deployed from the People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN's) Type 094 (Jin)-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs).
