Brazilian defence cuts to affect the Gripen and KC-390 programmes

30 September 2019

The troubles the Brazilian economy is still suffering from have led to a big reduction on defence spending that will delay the F-39 Gripen fighter and KC-390 airlifter acquisition programmes.

The delays were outlined by the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) to the National Defence and Foreign Relations Commission of the Representatives Chamber of the Congress in late September.

While the entry into service of the Embraer-Saab Gripen will remain 2021 as planned, deliveries for that year are expected to be reduced from 11 to 4 aircraft and the finalisation of the programme will be delayed from 2024 to 2026, or perhaps even 2028.
