The Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) last Adelaide-class guided-missile frigate, HMAS Melbourne , arrived at its home port of Sydney on 27 September, marking the end of its final voyage.

The 4,260-tonne warship, which bears pennant number 05, "berthed alongside Fleet Base East at Garden Island with her decommissioning pennant and battle ensign flying one last time", said the Australian Department of Defence (DoD) in a statement.

The DoD added that the 138 m-long vessel, which entered service in February 1992 as the fifth of six ships of the class, will be decommissioned in a ceremony set to be held at the same location on 26 October.

Australian fleet commander Rear Admiral Jonathan Mead was quoted by the DoD as saying that Melbourne gave 27 years of distinguished service to Australia's maritime operations.
