The Iraqi Council of Representatives has passed legislation to set up an independent body to oversee procurement and production of weapons and equipment.
State-run news agency NINA reported on 23 September that the new Military Industries Authority will independently produce materiel for the Kurdish Peshmerga and the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), as well as the Iraqi armed forces.
NINA quoted Iraqi MP Mohammed al-Darraji as saying that the new agency means that Iraq will no longer "depend on any external party to preserve the sovereignty and prestige of the country".
