India’s Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) has inaugurated a new facility to lead the company’s efforts to expand through research and development (R&D).
BEL said its new Product Development & Innovation Centre (PD&IC) – located in its Bangalore headquarters – will focus on the design, development, prototyping, and commercialisation of military systems and subsystems that can be marketed as standalone products or integrated into larger defence platforms.
The company said a priority of the centre, in which it invested INR2.2 billion (USD30.8 million) to develop, will be import substitution. The centre will also focus on generating intellectual property rights “in strategic areas, reducing external dependence for critical subsystems”, said BEL.
