Japan and New Zealand have agreed to deepen defence ties as part of a commitment to boost their bilateral strategic partnership, the two governments said on 19 September.

Following talks in Tokyo between Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his visiting New Zealand counterpart Jacinda Ardern, a joint statement said the countries would look to strengthen their defence and security relationship through expanded information sharing and dialogue.

The statement said Japan and New Zealand would also expand cyber defence co-operation and efforts to undertake joint projects in space-based technologies.

The governments provided no further details about defence co-operation.
