Argentina’s offshore patrol vessel (OPV) programme is making progress, with the first Argentine crew of 32 officers and ratings preparing to move to France to take over the first of four vessels.

The OPV deal between French shipbuilder Naval Group and the Argentine government was officially confirmed in December 2018. The contract, worth EUR319 million (USD353 million), finally came into force on 14 February, when Argentina made an initial payment of EUR112.454 million.

The programme covers the purchase of L’Adroit – built to the OPV-87/Gowind design as a private venture by Naval Group between 2010 and 2011 and used by the French Navy between 2012 and 2018 – and the construction of three additional ships to the same basic design, with small changes to fit Argentine requirements.
