Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI) has completed urban trials with its Carmel technology demonstrator using the company's Athena autonomous navigation software, according to Alice Kahana, director of business development and sales for the company's robotic division.
The goal of the Carmel programme is to provide the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) with armoured fighting vehicles crewed by two personnel with enhanced situational awareness while the vehicle is operated with hatches closed.
A number of Israeli companies are involved in the project, and Kahana explained that the core of IAI's offering is its Athena navigation software, which is designed to be platform-agnostic and enable a vehicle to localise and identify obstacles as well as navigate off-road.
