UK Chancellor of the Exchequer [finance secretary] Sajid Javid announced a defence budget increase of GBP2.2 billion (USD2.7 billion) in his government-wide spending review on 4 September.

Javid said this was "a real-term increase of 2.6% for budget next year" that would ensure that the UK would continue to meet the NATO 2% of gross domestic product (GDP) target for defence spending. The UK government had only committed in 2015 to increasing spending by 0.5% out to 2020.

"We know that hard power matters too," he said, adding that "Britain already spends more on our defence and national security than any other country in Europe."
